our story
Ann-Sophie + Renaat
We started our clay-venture in 2015 when we designed a collection funeral urns. As we were typographers at the time, we mainly were involved in designing monuments. We had a lot of contact with funeral homes and realized there was a huge need for a change.
The urn, according to us, had to be seen from the perspective from the interior where it should take place. Therefore the lid needed to be invisible and the urn needed to fit in it's surroundings. The shape needed to be a universal shape and the colors needed to be earthly. Each piece is built by hand with a unique pattern of imprints of ferns, wild flowers, leaves, pieces of branches, pine, seashells, anything natural and to be found in my surrounding. We created a collection called Element. We call them stoneware interrupted spheres. We completed our collection with interior pieces; candle holders made for your home and your garden.
We are real foodies who enjoy functional, esthetic and sustainable dinnerware. We love Oriental food, the tradition of ceramics through history and the beauty of it. So, from there on, it came natural to us to dive into the research of shapes, glazes and firing methods. Very soon we figured out that reduction fired glazes and high-fire stoneware clay was our hearts lie. We love the beautiful earthy palette of colors and tones, all natural made with wood ash, bone ash, soda ash, and iron oxide. We designed, made, redesigned and remade. We were developing intensively during a number of years. We created, we failed and we moved forward, always looking for better and consistent results.
We wanted to make plates that inspire chefs to create their pieces of art. We wanted that it would be sustainable for everyday use at a high pace. Now, we make plates that are beautiful and don't break or chip off by the slightest touch. They are great at retaining the heat coming out of the plate warmer, are dishwasher and microwave safe.
Our standard ware can be divided into two distinct categories. An essential line, appropriately called 'Essentials', universal in its look can be used for your everyday meal as wel as dinner parties. We also like to refer to them as 'Family Dinner' pieces, even though chefs love them too. They provide a minimalistic canvas for their creations, while maintaining the handmade touch. Family Dinner pieces are true to their name and essential to your collection of ceramics.
The second category is our 'Chef's Plate', where you will find clear to the eye oriental inspired pieces next to the more contemporary shapes. Each piece made in a specific way, with its own unique look and feel due to the classic, yet refreshing shape, suited choice of glazing method and firing cycle. Exposing the clay and providing texture to the piece is a consistent feature in our work.
Limited series will be available from time to time in small batches. Coffee and tea mugs made by Renaat are some of the things you can expect. Mug designs like the Essential and the Cycladic are restocked on regular basis. From my hand there are large serving platters featured. They are made to be functional but crafted from the artist's perspective. They are just beautiful on its own and can be that one unique addition to your living space you've been looking for.
With love and gratitude,
Ann-Sophie
